OpenCapacity showcased its AI-driven innovation at the Innovate UK BridgeAI Annual Showcase

London, 16 June 2025 - OpenCapacity proudly presented its cutting-edge AI innovations at the Innovate UK BridgeAI Annual Showcase, where it was recognised as a featured organisation in the 2024–2025 BridgeAI Annual Report. The company highlighted its pioneering partnership with Transport for London (TfL) aimed at transforming accessibility on London’s public transport network.

As part of the BridgeAI programme, a national initiative designed to accelerate responsible AI adoption in key sectors, OpenCapacity and TfL are collaborating to enhance the experience of wheelchair users across London’s bus system. By integrating advanced video analytics with TfL’s existing infrastructure, the project is working to provide real-time updates on the availability of wheelchair priority spaces on buses - a critical feature for improved accessibility and journey planning.

"TfL operates one of the most extensive bus networks in the world, with over 9,300 buses across 675 routes. Our shared goal is to use AI not just to optimise operations, but to make daily travel more inclusive," said CEO Gerrit Boehm. "This project reflects our commitment to building AI solutions that are both powerful and purposeful."

OpenCapacity’s AI technology uses existing CCTV cameras on buses to detect the occupancy status of wheelchair spaces. This real-time data can be integrated into TfL’s journey planning app, TfL Go, empowering passengers with accurate, up-to-date information - reducing uncertainty and making it easier to navigate the city, especially during peak travel times.

Beyond passenger experience, the solution offers operational benefits, helping TfL better manage capacity and maintain high-quality service across its network. This initiative is expected to set a new standard for accessible, data-driven public transport - one that other cities may look to replicate in the years ahead.

During the showcase, OpenCapacity also participated in a roundtable on ethical AI in public services and demonstrated its platform’s broader capabilities in helping public sector bodies improve capacity planning and resource management through data-led insights.

A huge thank you to Innovate UK, the BridgeAI programme, and the wider ecosystem of collaborators pushing the boundaries of what AI can do for everyone.

As we continue to innovate and grow, we remain committed to building technology that’s not just powerful - but purposeful.
